Meet Josie Levy Martin
Josie Levy Martin was born in France shortly before World War II and came to the United States in 1947. In her proclaimed book Never Tell Your Name, she decided to write of her experience as the hidden child almost 50 years later to acknowledge the life of a small girl, pay homage to the remarkable courage of Soeur St. Cybard, and to remember the many decent acts of ordinary people that allowed her to survive the darkest of times. Ms. Martin returned to the village of Lesterps in October of 2000 to be declared its “First Honorary Citizen” in a moving ceremony. However, the nun had died long before in 1968.
Ms. Martin is a writer and school psychologist. She has written for the Larchmont Chronicle highlighting children in school settings. Her work has also appeared in the Los Angeles Times, Parent’s Magazine and The Jewish Journal. Ms. Martin is married, has one son, and lives in Montecito.
In connection to sixth graders at Montecito Union reading historical fiction novels, on Friday, June 3rd, Ms. Martin visited the library and spoke with the entire sixth grade. She discussed her incredible history, gave details on how she wrote her book, and answered questions. We thank Ms. Martin for taking time out of her busy schedule to address our sixth grade students!
